The Angat Kayumanggi Youth Camp started as a three-day provincial student leadership summit organized by the Ayala Young Leaders Alliance – Dumaguete City Chapter (DumAYLA). It started in 2010-2011 with the theme “Planting the Seeds of Hope” gathering the 30 most outstanding junior high school leaders in Negros Oriental. This year, the said youth camp has expanded the search to the entire Region VII (Central Visayas) in partnership with the Ayala Young Leaders Alliance of Cebu City Chapter, Local Government Units, School Organizations and Non-governmental organizations. Both camps were held at the Kalinawagan Beach Resort, Zamboanguita, Negros Oriental in the third (3rd) week of December.
Jonathan Andro Tan and Crystal Eunice Dela Cruz, both Ayala Young Leaders Congress (AYLC) Batch 2010 alumni were the founders of the said camp. They both agreed that after AYLC, they realized that they could’ve done a lot more if they had the congress experience earlier. According to them, the congress also aims to form them into individuals of nationalistic and idealistic perceptions and actions in order for them to be faithful stewards of their communities and the country’s future.
“The camp was a great opportunity to look back to how we are so blessed, a time of giving back, a time to share everything to those who will be next to us. “ says Rey Dennis Caballero, founder of the Gaba-an Youth Lead, one of the partners for the second AKYC with the theme “Nurturing the Seed of Hope”.
Anthea Marie Bulaclac, a 14-year old junior student from La Consolacion College, Bais City shares that “The AKYC 2010 was very memorable for us campers, not because we're having fun but because it taught us a very good lesson on how to be a good leader, listener and a follower. It helped us learn how to be a good Filipino citizen by being courageous and responsible with ourselves. There were a lot of challenges that we've been through but still it was one of the BEST youth camp that we ever had.”
The Congress features lectures, outdoor activities, and plenary sessions. Individuals who highly exemplify excellent academic performance and leadership skills share their own leadership stories and experiences and challenge participants’ perspectives to foster growth and development. Also, speakers from the field of youth development and community advocacy share their visions for the community to enlighten the youth. Outdoor challenges develop a sense of self-efficacy, trust and teamwork among the participants and help build a community of learning that will be sustained after the congress. Project planning activities shall be conducted to give the young leaders a feel and a training of actual project management and planning.
The program provides participants opportunities to network with their peers and develop bonds of mutual respect that will be sustained over the course of their lifetimes. Moreover, as they shall embark on their journey as college students a year after the congress, they shall make informed choices and decisions and even as they assume positions of responsibility in government, private, and the social sectors.
Their shared commitment to integrity and national development will hopefully give rise to productive dialogue and cooperation. AKYC alumni are envisioned to become a collective and powerful catalyst for change and national renewal.
